2009-2010 Regular and Special Session have adjourned
Thanks to all those that spoke out against pro-drug legislation introduced this session, we were successful in defeating several bills. HB 1177/SB 5615 that sought to reclassify possession of 40 grams or less of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a civil infraction, and HB 2401 that sought to tax and regulate marijuana use in the state, both died in the House Committee on Safety & Emergency Preparedness when they did not receive enough votes to report out of committee. The bills were then reintroduced and retained in present status for the special session but were not acted on before adjournment, killing the bills.
The pro-drug lobby was successful in getting one bill passed that extends the current state medi-pot laws.
SB 5798 a bill that exempts health care professionals from liability and prosecution when recommending marijuana under the guise of medicine was signed by the governor and goes into effect later this year.
Steps you can take to promote sound drug policies include:
· Visit your Representative at either their state or local office
· Phone your legislator
· Speak to organizations in your community about this legislation
· Submit a Letter to the Editor or an Opinion Editorial to your local media outlet
