Senator Fasano Announces Passage of “Pill Mill” Legislation
State Senator Mike Fasano announces that the Florida Legislature passed SB 2272, commonly known as the “Pill Mill” bill. The legislation was filed to stop the proliferation of pain clinics that dispense huge amounts of controlled substances with no state oversight. It contains the recommendations made by Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp’s Prescription Drug Task Force to stem the diversion of controlled substances and the practice of doctor shopping.
“SB 2272 will require that pain clinics register with the state and be subject to inspections,” Senator Fasano states. “Additionally, the bill prohibits convicted felons from owning and operating a pain clinic. Only legitimate doctors who meet the most stringent training and certification requirements should be
operating pain clinics. This bill will go a long way to getting rid of the bad actors that have given Florida such a bad name.”
Additionally, the legislation will limit the amount of controlled substances dispensing physicians can sell to their cash‐paying clients. This will be a 72‐hour supply of medications. Additionally, doctors will be required to physically examine and document a need for the prescription of controlled substances
greater than 72 hours. The legislation will also prohibit doctors from advertising the fact that they prescribe and dispense controlled substances. This will stop the out of control advertising that takes place in certain parts of the state, especially in South Florida.
“The stories friends and family members have shared regarding a son, daughter, spouse or loved one who has been caught up in the net of drug addiction has been heart wrenching,” Senator Fasano comments. “Due to the hard work of my fellow sponsors, Representative John Legg and Senator Andy Gardiner, the heartbreak for other families touched by this horror may one day come to an end.”
The legislation now goes to the governor for his consideration.
