Patrick Kennedy Speaks Out Against Marijuana Legalization
With Colorado and Washington having recently legalized pot for recreational purposes, former Rhode Island congressman Patrick Kennedy speaks out.
Patrick Kennedy is no stranger to addiction. His personal battles with both prescription drugs and alcohol are well known. Mr. Kennedy will chair Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana), to be launched later this month in Denver, Colorado, a bi-partisan group looking to shift the marijuana debate from legalization to prevention and treatment.
In discussing Project SAM, Kennedy stated that his experiences with addiction and his research on mental health issues led him to speak out against legalizing pot. He understands the dangers of marijuana, stating that “In terms of neurobiology, there’s no distinction between the quality and types of drugs people get addicted to. Addiction is addiction is addiction.”
We commend Mr. Kennedy’s courage to talk about his personal battles, and his willingness to speak out against legalizing marijuana. We share his concerns about increased access to a drug that “destroys the brain and expedites psychosis.”
